Atlético Madrid and Arsenal settled for a 1–1 draw in a cagey UEFA Champions League semi-final first-leg encounter on Wednesday night in Madrid.

Julian Alvarez rescued the hosts with a second-half penalty after Arsenal had taken the lead before the break in a closely contested match defined by tactical discipline and VAR drama.

The visitors struck first when Viktor Gyokeres converted from the spot late in the first half after being fouled inside the box. However, Atletico responded 10 minutes into the second half, with Alvarez calmly equalising from the penalty spot following a handball by Ben White.

Arsenal were left frustrated late on after what appeared to be a decisive penalty was overturned following a VAR review, denying them a chance to take a first-leg advantage. The match lacked the attacking fireworks seen in the other semi-final but made up for it with intensity and caution, as neither side was willing to concede ground in a high-stakes contest.

Despite Atletico enjoying long spells of dominance, Arsenal’s defensive resilience ensured they left the Spanish capital with the tie finely balanced ahead of the return leg in London. Both teams will now turn their attention to the decisive second leg, with a place in the final still firmly up for grabs.
