The Federal Government of Nigeria has successfully prosecuted and convicted over 325 terrorists in its ongoing efforts to combat terrorism, including Boko Haram insurgency, IPOB insurrection, and banditry.
These convictions were secured during the recently concluded Phase 5 and Phase 6 terrorism trials at the Kainji Detention Facility.
In Phase 5, held in July 2024, 143 cases were heard, leading to 125 convictions. Similarly, Phase 6, conducted from December 9 to 13, 2024, saw 200 convictions from 237 cases.
A statement released on Sunday by the National Counter Terrorism Centre, Office of the National Security Adviser, outlined the range of sentences handed down. These include the death penalty, life imprisonment, and terms of 20 to 70 years, depending on the severity of the crimes.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria has achieved a major milestone in its unwavering campaign against terrorism,” the statement read.
It noted that individuals sentenced to the maximum penalty were those guilty of heinous offenses, including attacks on women and children, the destruction of religious sites, the slaughter of innocent civilians, and the abduction of women and children during a brutal assault on the Gina Kara Kai community in Borno State.
Additionally, individuals involved in financing terrorism were sentenced to life imprisonment. “This underscores the government’s unyielding resolve to dismantle all aspects of terrorist networks,” the statement added.
The trials, presided over by five Federal High Court judges, adhered to international standards of justice. The government assured the safety of judicial officers, witnesses, and other stakeholders involved in the proceedings.
“This achievement highlights the government’s commitment to delivering justice for victims of terrorism and safeguarding the lives and property of all Nigerians.
Measures have been implemented to ensure the safety of all participants, reflecting Nigeria’s dedication to global best practices in prosecuting terrorism-related cases,” the statement concluded.
This landmark effort marks a significant step in restoring peace and stability to regions affected by terrorism across Nigeria.
