Nigeria’s Super Falconets are gearing up for a critical Round of 16 match against Japan in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, after successfully advancing from a challenging group stage.

Having faced North Korea, Germany, and Venezuela, the team now turns its attention to the formidable Japanese side.

In the group stage, the Falconets recorded mixed results.
They started with a narrow 1-0 win over North Korea but were handed a 3-1 defeat by Germany.

However, the Nigerian team bounced back with an impressive 4-0 victory against Venezuela, sealing their place in the knockout round.

Japan has been dominant in their campaign so far, scoring 13 goals and conceding only once.

Their journey to the Round of 16 has been marked by a 7-0 win over New Zealand, a 4-1 triumph against Ghana, and a comfortable 2-0 win over Austria in their final group match.

Historically, the Falconets reached the finals in 2014 but have struggled to progress beyond the Round of 16 since then.

They were eliminated in the group stage in 2016 and suffered Round of 16 losses to Spain and the Netherlands in the 2018 and 2022 editions, respectively.

Both teams head into the match without any injury concerns.

Maya Hijjikati is expected to lead Japan’s attack, while Nigeria’s coach Danjuma may once again opt to start Faith Omilana in goal, leaving Shukuray Bakare on the bench.

Key players like Sabastine Flourish, Opeyemi Ajakaye, Janet Akekoromowei, and Chiamaka Okwuchukwu are also likely to feature prominently for Nigeria.

The highly anticipated match will take place at the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo in Bogotá, which has a capacity of 10,000.

Fans can tune in on September 13, 2024, for what promises to be a thrilling encounter.
