The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has underscored the importance of empowering women through training and retraining to drive transformation in Nigeria’s transport industry, particularly the aviation sector. He highlighted the vital role women can play in fostering innovation and progress within the industry.
Keyamo made this statement at the inaugural conference themed “Mindset Plus Skillset: Championing an Inclusive Agenda for Women in the Nigerian Transport Industry” organized by Global Transport Policy (GTP) Women in Transport in Lagos. The event brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and professionals to discuss gender inclusion in the transport sector.
Represented by Mrs. Obiageli Orah of the Public Affairs and Consumer Protection Department at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Keyamo addressed the challenges women face in a traditionally male-dominated sector. He emphasized that technological advancements in all modes of transport—air, road, rail, and water—necessitate specialized skills that women are well-equipped to contribute.
“The transport sector is multifaceted and demands unique skill sets,” Keyamo stated. “Policymakers must recognize the diversity of our society and create equal opportunities for women to excel and lead in this field.” He added that women’s exceptional management capabilities make their inclusion essential for sustainable growth in the aviation industry.
Addressing aspiring women in aviation, Keyamo pointed out the global disparity in female pilots and the challenges of gender bias. “The number of female pilots worldwide remains low. To succeed in this industry, you must pursue your passion, remain professional, and develop strong communication skills. Gender bias exists, but it should not deter you,” he said.
Dr. Oluwasegun Musa, chairman of the event, emphasized the economic benefits of gender inclusion in transport. He noted that women’s strategic involvement enhances efficiency and innovation, stating, “When women are strategically involved, we unlock new perspectives and solutions that propel the industry forward.”
Regina Robinson, the conference convener, shared that the vision to promote women’s involvement in transport began 14 years ago with training initiatives for government agencies and corporate organizations. Over time, the vision has grown into a comprehensive effort to create pathways for women to thrive in the sector.
The conference stressed the need for an inclusive agenda that combines mindset and skillset development to empower women in the transport industry. Through sustained advocacy and training, barriers limiting women’s participation can be dismantled, paving the way for their active involvement in shaping the future of Nigeria’s transport sector.
