The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced on Tuesday that out of the 2,629,025 registered voters in Edo State, a total of 2,249,780 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) have been collected in preparation for the governorship election scheduled for September 21, 2024.
Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, disclosed this in a statement, noting that the collected PVCs represent 85.57% of the total, while 379,245 cards, or 14.43%, remain uncollected as of the extended deadline on Sunday, September 16, 2024.
The statement reads: “Nigerians may recall that the Commission recently announced that the total number of registered voters in Edo State is 2,629,025. Of this figure, 2,249,780 (85.57%) have collected their Permanent Voter’s Cards, while 379,245 (14.43%) of the PVCs remain uncollected as of the end of the extended period for PVC collection on Sunday, 16 September 2024.”
In preparation for the election, INEC has uploaded a detailed breakdown of PVC collection data for each of the 4,519 polling units in the state. The information is available on the Commission’s website, providing guidance for political parties, candidates, and the general public.
INEC commenced PVC collection at the ward level from August 22 to 26, 2024, and later at Local Government offices from August 28 to September 8, 2024.
Due to appeals from stakeholders, the Commission extended the deadline for PVC collection by three days, from September 13 to 15, 2024, with collection running from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily across the state’s 18 Local Government Areas.
