A suspected cholera outbreak has struck the Yola-North Local Government Area of Adamawa State, resulting in the tragic deaths of four individuals and the hospitalization of 36 others.

The outbreak, which has affected several communities including Alkalawa, Ajiya, and Limawa wards, was confirmed by Mr. Jibrin Ibrahim, the Executive Chairman of Yola-North Local Government Council.

He revealed the details during a visit to the Infectious Disease Control Centre (IDC) in Yola on Sunday, where the affected victims are receiving treatment.

Initially, 20 cases of cholera were reported, but the number of confirmed cases quickly doubled to 40, with four people losing their lives to the disease.

Health officials and the Red Cross, along with international partners, have responded promptly to contain the outbreak and provide medical care to the victims.

Many of the hospitalized individuals have shown signs of improvement and are under the care of medical personnel.

The Executive Chairman praised the rapid response of health workers and urged the community to take precautions.

Ibrahim pointed out that contaminated water sources, worsened by recent flooding in some areas, are believed to be the cause of the outbreak.

He urged residents to maintain good hygiene practices, drink clean water, and thoroughly wash vegetables and fruits before consumption to prevent the spread of cholera and other waterborne diseases.

The authorities are closely monitoring the situation as efforts to control the outbreak continue.
