Bayern Munich’s Club World Cup campaign took a heartbreaking turn on Saturday as star midfielder Jamal Musiala sustained a serious leg injury during their 2-0 quarterfinal defeat to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in Orlando. The 22-year-old suffered a fractured leg and a dislocated ankle in a first-half incident that stunned players and fans alike.

Bayern manager Vincent Kompany, visibly emotional after the match, described himself as “boiling with anger” over the incident, which left one of his key players sidelined again just after recovering from a previous setback.

The injury occurred when Musiala’s leg became trapped awkwardly under PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma during a challenge for the ball.

The immediate reaction from players on both sides reflected the severity of the situation, with several visibly shaken and turning away in shock.

Kompany expressed deep frustration, emphasizing that while he could accept the team’s defeat, the manner in which Musiala was injured left him furious. “This isn’t about the result.

It’s about what happened to a player who lives and breathes the game. He had just returned from another injury. To see this happen again—it’s painful and enraging,” he said.

Musiala, who was recently voted German National Team Player of the Year for the second time, has been a cornerstone of Bayern’s midfield since debuting at age 17 in 2020.

He has already amassed a decorated trophy cabinet, including five Bundesliga titles, three German Cups, and a Champions League crown.

Following the incident, Bayern confirmed that Musiala returned to Munich on Sunday from the United States and is set to undergo surgery in the coming days. Club board member Max Eberl described the setback as a major blow to both the team and the player personally.

“This hits FC Bayern hard,” Eberl stated. “Jamal plays a central role in our system and is vital to our success. Beyond that, we’re all deeply affected on a human level.

He’s just come back from an injury, and now this. But we’ll support him with everything he needs and can’t wait to see him back.”

PSG goalkeeper Donnarumma also offered his support, sending well wishes to Musiala in a social media post after the match.

Musiala’s road to recovery is expected to be lengthy, but Bayern officials have emphasized their full commitment to his rehabilitation and eventual return to the pitch.
