A recent attack by armed bandits on Mera community in Kebbi State’s Augie Local Government Area has left 15 residents dead, marking another tragic incident in the state. Kebbi State Deputy Governor, Abubakar Umar Tafida, confirmed the attack and offered condolences to the bereaved families during his visit to Mera.

He assured residents of the government’s commitment to bringing those responsible to justice and to working closely with security agencies to protect communities from further violence.

The Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Samaila Mera, also expressed sorrow over the attack, calling for unity and resilience among the people. The victims were laid to rest in a funeral attended by the Deputy Governor, the Commissioner of Police, and the Emir.

This tragedy follows a pattern of escalating violence across northern Nigeria. In Katsina State, an attack on Jibia Local Government Area resulted in the deaths of two security personnel—a Katsina State Community Watch Corps member and a vigilante—while five others sustained gunshot injuries.

The bandits launched simultaneous assaults on Ka’ida, Unguwar One Boy, and Danmarke quarters in Jibia Township around 9:15 pm on Friday.

ASP Abubakar Sadiq, spokesperson for the Katsina State Police Command, confirmed that a combined security team, including the police, military, community watch corps, and vigilantes, responded promptly, engaging the attackers in a prolonged firefight that eventually forced the bandits to retreat.

Sixteen hostages were successfully rescued, with the joint security team reporting “unspecified casualties” among the attackers. Further updates on the security situation are expected.

These incidents highlight the persistent security challenges in northern Nigeria, with authorities reaffirming their commitment to combatting banditry and safeguarding citizens.
