The former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, appeared at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja on Wednesday for a hearing on allegations of a ₦110 billion fraud leveled against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Bello, who had been declared wanted by the EFCC in April 2024, surrendered himself at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, where he was interrogated before being transported to court.
Charges Against Bello
The EFCC initially filed 19 charges against Bello, accusing him and his associates of laundering over ₦80 billion. The charges also involve his nephews, Ali Bello, Dauda Suliman, and Abdulsalam Hudu.
Wednesday’s arraignment marks the first court appearance for the former governor since the EFCC filed the charges. The commission had previously struggled to secure his presence in court.
The case, involving one of the largest alleged financial crimes in recent times, continues to attract significant public attention. Further details on the proceedings are expected as the hearing progresses.
