Senate President Godswill Akpabio has denied allegations that senators received a $15,000 bribe to support the proclamation of a state of emergency in Rivers State.
Responding to reports that lawmakers were allegedly given the money at his Maitama residence during Ramadan fast-breaking, Akpabio, through his Special Adviser on Media, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, dismissed the claims as baseless.
According to the rumours, senators purportedly received $5,000 on Tuesday and an additional $10,000 on Wednesday, a day before voting on the proclamation.
However, Eyiboh refuted these claims, stating, “Since Senator Godswill Akpabio became Senate President, he has been hosting lawmakers for Iftar. He did it last year and did it again this year, so why turn it into a rumour?”
On the bribery allegations, Eyiboh said, “Giving money for what? I am aware of the fast-breaking gatherings, but I can categorically say the claims of senators receiving $5,000 or $10,000 are false. People are merely fabricating these stories to fuel their malice and hate campaign.”
He further questioned the intent behind the allegations, adding, “Why associate this year’s gathering with money when it was done last year without such claims?”
