The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, has extended his condolences to the Zamfara State Government following the accidental airstrike in Dangebe, Maradun Local Government Area, on January 11, 2025.
During his visit to Gusau on Thursday, Air Marshal Abubakar described the incident as regrettable and assured that the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) remains committed to preventing such occurrences in the future.
In a meeting with Governor Dauda Lawal, the Air Chief commended the state government’s response to the incident and reiterated NAF’s dedication to collaborating with authorities to enhance security in Zamfara.
To support the affected victims, the Air Force has provided financial assistance, pledged to rebuild damaged structures, and committed to replacing two motorcycles lost in the incident.
Air Marshal Abubakar further assured that the NAF has implemented measures to improve precision in air operations and prevent civilian casualties in the future.
In response, Governor Lawal urged the Air Force to establish a permanent base or an operational hangar in the state upon the completion of Gusau International Airport.
Acknowledging Zamfara as a hotspot for banditry in the Northwest, the governor emphasized the need for a stronger military presence to combat security threats. He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting security agencies in their counterinsurgency efforts.
Governor Lawal commended Air Marshal Abubakar for NAF’s swift response in aiding victims and restoring peace, highlighting the provision of financial support, reconstruction efforts, and property replacement.
As part of security enhancement measures, the governor formally presented the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) for a new Air Force base in Zamfara. The establishment of the base is expected to bolster counterinsurgency operations, improve rapid response capabilities, and enhance security across the region.
