The Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) has taken significant measures to regulate the pharmaceutical industry by shutting down over 400 illegal drug stores in Cross River State.
This enforcement action, disclosed by Pharmacist Stephen Esumobi, Director of Enforcement for Cross River State, aims to uphold the quality, safety, and effectiveness of medications in the state.
The decision follows a comprehensive inspection of drug dealers across the state.
Esumobi emphasized the importance of regulatory compliance to protect public health and maintain the integrity of the healthcare system.
“Approximately 500 premises were inspected, leading to the closure of 405 facilities and the arrest of five illegal medicine dealers,” he reported.
The closed facilities include 31 pharmacies, 174 patent medicine shops, and 200 unlicensed drug stores.
Esumobi noted that poor storage conditions and exposure to harsh environmental factors, such as high temperatures and humidity, contribute to the degradation of pharmaceutical products.
The PCN remains committed to ensuring that Nigerians have access to safe and effective pharmaceutical products.
“The enforcement efforts are crucial for identifying unregistered establishments that distribute medications without proper oversight,” Esumobi said.
