Nigerian rapper and social media personality, Speed Darlington, has initiated legal action against the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, demanding ₦300 million in damages for alleged unlawful detention and human rights abuses.
The lawsuit, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, stems from Darlington’s recent arrest over allegations of defamation and cyberstalking, reportedly linked to comments he made about fellow artist Burna Boy. The rapper claims he was detained without formal charges and subjected to torture and inhumane treatment during his time in police custody.
Represented by his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, Darlington is seeking either his immediate and unconditional release or his formal presentation in court. The case is scheduled for a hearing on 13 January 2025.
In his statement, Darlington decried the alleged abuse, stating, “This is not just about me; it’s about ensuring no Nigerian is subjected to such treatment again.” His lawsuit has sparked widespread debate on social media, with many Nigerians calling for accountability and reforms in the nation’s policing system.
As of now, the Nigeria Police Force has not issued an official response to the allegations or the lawsuit.
