Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has declared zero tolerance for assaults and killings of police officers by criminal elements. The warning was issued during his visit to the Enugu State Police Command on Friday, ahead of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s official visit to the state.

Egbetokun emphasized the Nigerian Police Force’s commitment to ensuring justice in cases of officer fatalities, stating:

“Anywhere a police officer is killed, there will be an appropriate response from the police, moving forward. We are saying no to assault on our officers and the killing of our men. We will not tolerate it again.”

The IGP assured officers of the federal government’s dedication to improving their welfare and providing resources needed to tackle criminality. He also highlighted the importance of professionalism and ethical conduct in policing.

“We will ensure that we train and retrain you, equipping you with modern policing tools to discharge your duties to the highest standards,” Egbetokun said.

During the visit, Egbetokun lauded Governor Peter Mbah’s administration for its commitment to security and development. Projects to be inaugurated by President Tinubu include the ultra-modern Command and Control Centre and 150 patrol vehicles equipped with AI-embedded cameras for the Distress Response Squad.

The IGP praised the collaboration between the Enugu State Government and the Nigeria Police Force, which has led to significant improvements in security across the state.

“Your commitment to our shared goal of a safer Nigeria is truly commendable. The successes recorded in Enugu State show the impact of our collaboration,” Egbetokun stated.

President Tinubu’s one-day state visit to Enugu will include the commissioning of several projects initiated by Governor Mbah’s administration. These include:

30 completed Smart Green Schools out of 260 under construction.

60 completed Primary Healthcare Centres across 260 wards.

The Enugu International Conference Centre.

90 urban roads in Enugu City.

Meanwhile, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command reported the recovery of a stolen Toyota Prado Land Cruiser Jeep during routine patrols in the Apo-Gudu area. The vehicle, found without a registration number, was towed to the FCT Police Command Headquarters.

The FCT Police Command called on members of the public with missing vehicles matching the description to visit the headquarters for verification and possible recovery.

In his address, the IGP stressed that assaulting or killing police officers is a crime against the state. However, he also reminded officers to respect citizens’ rights while carrying out their duties.

“We remain committed to pursuing policing reforms that prioritize community engagement, professionalism, and ethical conduct. Together, we can overcome the challenges we face and make Nigeria safer for all,” Egbetokun concluded.

The Nigerian Police Force reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, promising decisive action against any threats to its personnel or the public.
