The Edo State Government, announced plans to compensate individuals whose lands or properties were unlawfully acquired or destroyed during the administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki.
This was disclosed by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Samson Osagie, during a press briefing in Benin City on Monday.
Osagie revealed that the previous government had acquired community lands and private properties without proper compensation.
“The administration of Senator Monday Okpebholo is committed to addressing the injustices of the past to foster harmony in the state,” Osagie said.
He emphasized the government’s resolve to ensure fairness, stating, “There are numerous properties belonging to Edo citizens who have worked hard and invested in the state that were forcefully taken without compensation.
This administration will ensure that such owners are compensated, and properties that need to be released are returned to their rightful owners.”
Osagie assured the public that all complaints regarding such acquisitions would be reviewed thoroughly, and necessary actions would be taken to deliver justice.
“The governor, Senator Okpebholo, is determined to examine all grievances and ensure those entitled to compensation receive what is due to them,” he added.
The Attorney General also stressed the importance of resolving legal disputes that could hinder the administration’s progress, stating, “My ministry will provide legal counsel to the governor to ensure governance is conducted with a human face, free from oppression and victimization in Edo State.”
