U.S. President Joe Biden has declared January 9 as a national day of mourning in honor of former President Jimmy Carter, urging Americans to gather in their places of worship to pay tribute to his legacy.

In a proclamation issued by the White House on Sunday, Biden called on citizens to remember Carter’s contributions, saying, “I call on the American people to assemble on that day in their respective places of worship, there to pay homage to the memory of President James Earl Carter, Jr.”

Biden also extended the call globally, inviting people around the world to join the U.S. in this solemn occasion.

The announcement underscores Carter’s lasting impact as a leader and humanitarian.
