The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government are scheduled to meet on Monday to discuss the union’s demands and prevent a looming strike.
ASUU issued a 21-day ultimatum on Wednesday, calling on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to address persistent issues hampering the advancement of Nigerian universities.
ASUU National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, delivered the ultimatum during a press conference at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.
In a bid to prevent the strike, Minister of Education Prof. Tahir Mamman announced that government representatives would meet with ASUU leadership on Monday.
The announcement was made on Thursday during an interview on TVC’s “Beyond 100 Days” program.
“We have already sent a notice to ASUU’s leadership for a meeting on Monday,” Mamman said, noting that the government has reviewed ASUU’s concerns and intends to address them in the upcoming discussions.
“Some of these issues are longstanding, like the 2009 agreement, which dates back to 1981.
We have been in continuous dialogue with ASUU to resolve the challenges within the university system,” the Minister added.
