The Kaduna State Government has reiterated its commitment to promoting exclusive breastfeeding to reduce infant and child mortality. This was announced by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, during a press briefing to mark the 2024 World Breastfeeding Week.

Dr. Balarabe highlighted the critical role of breastfeeding in providing essential nutrients and protection against common childhood illnesses. She noted a concerning decline in early initiation of breastfeeding in the state—from 35.9% to 13% according to the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey 2021—but assured that the government is taking significant measures to support breastfeeding mothers.

Initiatives to support breastfeeding include the provision of qualified health providers, necessary vaccines, strengthening of primary health care structures, the approval of a six-month paid maternity leave, the establishment of nutrition corners, and setting up crèches in government offices.

Despite challenges such as ignorance, hunger, poverty, and insecurity, Dr. Balarabe expressed optimism that these issues could be addressed through collective efforts. She emphasized the importance of breast milk in safeguarding against common childhood illnesses and boosting infants’ immune systems with colostrum, the first milk produced by a mother.

Dr. Balarabe also commended Governor Senator Uba Sani for his leadership in addressing regional insecurity, which she believes will improve conditions for breastfeeding mothers. She urged everyone to support breastfeeding initiatives to ensure the survival and thriving of infants in Kaduna State.

“Breast milk is central to the nurturing and survival of our babies and our humanity. Let us work together to close the gap and support breastfeeding for all in Kaduna State,” she concluded.
