Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, is planning to revive the state’s Neighbourhood Watch, a community-based security outfit established by the previous administration. The governor revealed this intention during a closed-door meeting with the security outfit’s leaders at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Tuesday night.
Wogbo Lawrence, the Head of Command for Rivers State Neighbourhood Watch, briefed newsmen after the meeting, expressing satisfaction with the governor’s assurance of support after six years of neglect. Lawrence noted that despite the lack of government funding, the outfit has managed to maintain 1,150 personnel across the state’s 23 local government areas.
Although an Act to establish the Neighbourhood Watch agency was signed into law in March 2018, its operations were hindered during the previous administration. This was partly due to opposition from the All Progressives Congress (APC), which claimed that the security outfit was being used to intimidate its members during the 2019 elections.
