President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Aisha Garba, an accomplished international development expert, as the Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
The announcement was made on Tuesday through a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
Garba, a Senior Education Specialist with the World Bank, brings over two decades of experience in driving educational development initiatives across various countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Somalia, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
Her expertise spans the design and implementation of education reforms aimed at fostering human and economic development.
With more than 15 years of service at the World Bank, she has led large-scale education reforms from conception to execution and impact assessment. Notably, her work extends to fragile and conflict-affected regions, where she has implemented sustainable education programs.
Garba’s professional contributions include aiding Nigeria’s attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in education.
She has also worked as a consultant for prominent global organizations such as the Department for International Development (DFID), Regent Foundation, and Muslim Aid Organization.
Academically, Garba holds a Bachelor’s degree in English and Computer Studies from Petra American University in Jordan and a Master’s degree in International Development from the University of Birmingham, UK.
In her new role at UBEC, Garba is expected to spearhead efforts to provide quality education for Nigerian children while enhancing their global competitiveness.
This appointment reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to revitalizing Nigeria’s basic education sector, aligning with his broader vision of inspiring renewed hope and driving sustainable development in the country.
