The Federal Executive Council (FEC), approved the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University in honor of the former Nigerian Head of State and elder statesman, General Yakubu Gowon.
This decision was announced by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a briefing with State House correspondents after FEC’s final meeting for 2024, held at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.
Idris stated, “The Federal Executive Council has decided to rename the University of Abuja to honor General Yakubu Gowon.
The institution will now be known as Yakubu Gowon University.”
He added that the renaming process will require legislative approval.
“The decision will be forwarded to the National Assembly for the necessary legislative action to formalize the name change,” he explained.
In addition, the minister announced that the council will go on recess from December 18, 2024, to January 6, 2025.
Further details on the implementation of the renaming process are expected to emerge.
