Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, announced a commitment of over ₦2 billion towards upgrading the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH) and addressing accommodation challenges by constructing student hostels.

The governor disclosed this on Saturday during a Town Hall meeting with Enugu residents, themed “Governance Issues: The Journey So Far.”

He addressed questions raised by the Students Union leadership, emphasizing his administration’s focus on education and infrastructure development.

“Our administration is not only building smart schools for primary and secondary students but is also fostering innovation and experiential learning in tertiary institutions,” Mbah said.

He revealed that the state government had earmarked over ₦2 billion solely for the renovation of ESUTH, adding that efforts to enhance educational infrastructure extended across various levels of schooling.

By 2025, the state plans to construct 17 smart green secondary schools, complementing the 245 of 260 smart green schools currently under construction for nursery through junior secondary school levels.

“We have dedicated one-third of our total budget in two consecutive years to education because we recognize that education shapes a nation.

As a state, we will consistently invest in it,” Mbah stated.

He noted that the timeline for completing the 245 smart schools had been set and contractor’s progress was being closely monitored.

“By September 2025, every child in Enugu will attend a smart school.

So far, we’ve trained 11,000 smart school teachers and directors of experiential learning,” Mbah added.

The governor affirmed that the investments were aimed at creating a future-focused education system: “This is not about me but about our children and generations to come.

Everything we have done is to ensure the best learning environment equipped with technological tools for our children.”
