The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has imposed a ban on the use of firecrackers, commonly known as knockouts, as part of measures to ensure safety during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
In a statement on Saturday, the command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, announced that the Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, implemented the ban to prevent incidents that could endanger lives and property.
“This ban is implemented to ensure the safety of all residents and to protect lives and property throughout the festive season,” Disu stated. “The use of these items creates unwarranted fear and anxiety in the community. This ban is essential to maintaining peace and safety. Anyone found using or selling firecrackers will be arrested and prosecuted according to the law.”
The police explained that firecrackers often trigger unnecessary panic, pose fire hazards, and can lead to avoidable incidents, underscoring the importance of compliance.
Community leaders and residents were urged to help raise awareness about the risks associated with firecrackers and the need to adhere to the directive. The police also encouraged vigilance, advising residents to report any suspicious activities or violations of the ban through designated emergency hotlines.
Commissioner Disu assured the public of the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order throughout the festive period, emphasizing the importance of a peaceful and safe celebration for all.
