Magistrates in Cross River State are set to commence an indefinite strike on Monday, December 9, 2024, following unresolved disputes with the state government.
The decision, announced by the Magistrates Association of Nigeria (MAN), Cross River State Chapter, comes after a series of warning strikes and failed attempts to address an 8-point demand that includes improved welfare, overdue promotions, and better working conditions.
In a bulletin issued on December 8, 2024, the association expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s lack of response.
The statement, signed by the chapter chairman, Emmanuel Onah, Esq., and the state secretary, Solomon Abuo, Esq., directed all magistrates to abstain from official duties indefinitely.
The strike action follows an extended period of dialogue and cautionary measures.
According to the association, a communiqué issued on November 5, 2024, outlined their demands, while a subsequent letter to the governor on November 11, 2024, provided notice of the impending strike.
Despite a warning strike held from November 27 to November 29, the government reportedly failed to engage in meaningful negotiations or address the grievances.
The association reiterated that the strike will continue until all demands are fully met.
Members were urged to ensure full compliance by refraining from court sittings and other official responsibilities until further notice.
This development is expected to have significant implications for the state’s judicial system, as magistrates are key to the administration of justice at the grassroots level.
