The Ebonyi State Government has reported 23 fatalities and 48 confirmed cases of Lassa fever out of 394 suspected cases recorded between January and December 2024.
Governor Francis Nwifuru disclosed these figures on Thursday during an event organized by the state Ministry of Health in Abakaliki. He emphasized the government’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery, particularly in rural areas, through strategic interventions.
“In Ebonyi State, we have recorded 394 suspected cases since January till date, with 48 confirmed cases, out of which 23 persons died while 25 were treated and discharged,” Nwifuru stated.
He attributed the spread of the virus to socio-cultural practices, poor health-seeking behaviors, inadequate sanitation, and lack of awareness, adding that the administration has prioritized public health infrastructure to combat outbreaks of diseases like Lassa fever and cholera.
Highlighting plans to boost healthcare delivery, Nwifuru announced the establishment of specialist hospitals in each of the state’s three senatorial zones.
“Our administration is committed to ensuring that every Ebonyi citizen enjoys basic, affordable, quality, and accessible healthcare. This includes employing qualified personnel, procuring medical equipment and consumables, and making substantial provisions in the 2025 budget to strengthen our health sector,” he said.
The governor called for greater community engagement and enhanced surveillance systems to prevent future outbreaks and safeguard public health.
