President Bola Tinubu celebrated the reappointment of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for a second term as Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), commending her exceptional leadership and the global trust she has earned.
In a statement issued by the State House on Friday, Tinubu highlighted the significance of Okonjo-Iweala’s historic achievements as the first African and first woman to lead the 164-member WTO.
“This reappointment is a testament to her outstanding leadership and the confidence the international community places in her ability to drive sustainable global economic growth,” Tinubu said.
Her first term, which began in March 2021, will conclude on August 31, 2025, with the second term commencing on September 1, 2025.
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, emphasized Nigeria’s support for Okonjo-Iweala, lauding her commitment to equitable global trade practices and reforms aimed at fostering international cooperation.
“Nigeria reaffirms its commitment to the WTO’s mission of establishing a fair, inclusive, and equitable multilateral trading system,” the presidency stated.
Okonjo-Iweala, a former Nigerian Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, has cemented her position as a leading figure in global trade and governance.
