The Chief Judge of Ogun State, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, on Friday pardoned 14 inmates during a jail delivery exercise held at the Judiciary Complex in Kobape, Abeokuta.

The initiative aimed at decongesting correctional facilities in the state saw inmates released on health and compassionate grounds.

However, Justice Dipeolu declined to pardon two high-profile suspects: 51-year-old Jimoh Muhammed, accused of raping a 14-year-old girl in 2018, and 40-year-old Suru Philip, allegedly involved in the 2019 kidnapping of a traditional ruler in Efire Town, Ogun Waterside Local Government Area.

Speaking during the exercise, Justice Dipeolu emphasized the importance of jail delivery programs as tools for decongestion, justice review, and societal reintegration.

She highlighted systemic challenges, including overcrowding and delayed court proceedings, and advocated for innovative solutions such as non-custodial sentences for minor offenses and compensatory justice for victims.

“These challenges within our justice system demand urgent attention and creative solutions,” she said.

“The primary essence of this program is to ensure that our system supports reintegration rather than mere punishment, especially for inmates who have endured prolonged custody without trial,” she continued.

The Chief Judge noted that during a similar exercise in April 2024, 48 inmates were released from Ilaro, Oba, and Ibara Correctional Centres after thorough case reviews.

Justice Dipeolu urged the newly pardoned inmates to seize the opportunity for a fresh start.

“This is a chance for reflection, growth, and new beginnings.

Use this second chance to rebuild your lives.

It is never too late to seek redemption and make amends,” she advised.

The Comptroller of Correctional Centres in Ogun State, Ayodeji Adepoju, lauded Justice Dipeolu’s commitment to justice reforms and appealed to society to support the reintegration of ex-inmates.

He also encouraged the released individuals to become responsible citizens and contribute positively to their communities.
