The Nigerian Army confirmed the arrest of investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo at a suspected illegal oil bunkering site, following public outcry over his detention.

The Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), which Soyombo founded, revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that he had been held in custody by the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt for three days.

“Journalism is not a crime,” the FIJ stated.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Acting Deputy Director of 6 Division Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Danjuma, clarified the circumstances surrounding Soyombo’s detention.

He explained that the arrest occurred during a targeted operation against a notorious gang of oil thieves involved in pipeline sabotage and illegal oil connections in the region.

“Troops traced the criminals to an illegal oil bunkering site based on intelligence,” Danjuma said.

“Arrests were made at the scene, including that of Fisayo Soyombo.

The suspects are currently undergoing preliminary investigations to determine their level of involvement,” Danjuma continued.

Danjuma emphasized the army’s commitment to combating oil theft and urged media outlets to ensure accurate reporting.

“Soyombo’s arrest is tied to the activities of these oil thieves in the region.

We continue to intensify our operations to curb illegal activities that undermine oil and gas production in the country,” he stated.

The statement reiterated the army’s dedication to eradicating criminal activities and safeguarding Nigeria’s critical resources.
