The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Education, Idongesit Etiebet, announced the suspension of Dr. Nse Sunday Umoh, the Principal-General of Presbyterian Senior Science College, Ididep, over allegations of poor feeding and substandard conditions for boarding students.
The suspension follows an outcry from students over malnutrition despite significant boarding fees paid to the school management.
A viral video exposing the deplorable meals served at the school prompted the government to take immediate action.
“Following the very disturbing video where students were fed with unpalatable and non-nutritional meals at Presbyterian Senior Science College, Ididep, I paid an unscheduled visit to the school,” Etiebet stated in a press release issued in Uyo on Saturday.
The commissioner revealed that the incident has triggered a comprehensive investigation into boarding facilities at the school and 25 other state-owned boarding schools.
“I have directed a review of hostels, dining halls, recreation areas, menus, kitchens, and sanitary facilities.
This review will be jointly overseen by the Permanent Secretaries of the Ministry of Education and the State Secondary Education Board,” she said.
Pending the outcome of the investigation, Dr. Umoh has been suspended from his role as Principal of the school.
Etiebet reiterated the state government’s commitment to student welfare, stating that the free education policy covers tuition fees only, while boarding fees remain the responsibility of parents.
Despite this, the administration remains dedicated to upholding the well-being and dignity of students in public schools.
She appealed to parents to fulfill their parental responsibilities by supporting their children, particularly in meeting basic needs not covered by government programs.
“The Ministry is committed to ensuring that all public school facilities meet irreducible minimum standards that uphold the well-being of both learners and staff.
We urge the public to remain patient while this investigation lasts,” the commissioner stated.
Reports of malnutrition and poor sanitary conditions in boarding schools, including Federal Government Colleges within Akwa Ibom, have persisted despite the high boarding fees charged by school authorities.
The government has pledged to address these challenges as part of Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda, which prioritizes education reform.
Etiebet assured the public of the administration’s unwavering commitment to improving the state’s education system and ensuring accountability in school management.
