Bayer Leverkusen and Nigeria striker Victor Boniface is set to miss several games after sustaining a leg injury during international duty, head coach Xabi Alonso confirmed on Friday.

“He’s got a small injury in his thigh muscle.

It’s a shame,” Alonso told reporters ahead of Saturday’s Bundesliga clash with Heidenheim.

While initial fears suggested the forward might miss the remainder of 2024, Alonso struck an optimistic tone about Boniface’s recovery timeline.

“He won’t be there tomorrow or against Salzburg (Champions League),” Alonso said.

“We hope he will play again this year.

We have to wait and see, but it’s not going to be six or eight weeks,” Alonso continued.

In Boniface’s absence, forward Patrik Schick, who has made just two league starts this season, is expected to lead the attack.

“He is always ready.

We don’t just need him now, but always,” Alonso remarked.

Leverkusen, who went unbeaten domestically last season on their way to a league and cup double, have struggled to replicate their form this campaign.

The team currently sits fourth in the Bundesliga, nine points behind leaders Bayern Munich, having already dropped 13 points, one more than they did in the entirety of last season.

Boniface has been a key player for Leverkusen, leading the team’s scoring charts with six goals and one assist in 10 league appearances.

His absence poses a significant challenge as the team looks to regain its footing in the title race.
