Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen reaffirmed his support for striker Victor Boniface despite the player’s difficulties in translating his club-level success to the national team.
Speaking after Nigeria’s surprising 2-1 defeat to Rwanda in their final Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group D qualifier on Monday, Eguavoen acknowledged the frustration surrounding Boniface’s form but emphasized the striker’s importance to his plans.
The match, held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, saw the already-qualified Super Eagles fall to a resilient Rwandan side that came from behind to secure victory.
Despite the loss, Nigeria topped the group with 11 points, earning a spot in the AFCON 2025 tournament in Morocco.
Addressing questions about Boniface’s challenges in adapting to the Super Eagles setup, Eguavoen admitted the situation has been tough but stressed his commitment to supporting the 22-year-old forward.
“Boniface is capable of great things, especially at his club,” Eguavoen said.
“When he comes here, we try to give him confidence and playing time,” he continued.
The coach revealed he has had multiple conversations with Boniface in an effort to boost the player’s morale but noted that the striker has yet to hit top form for the national team.
“I’m someone who believes in giving players confidence,” Eguavoen added.
“I’ve done enough, but for whatever reason, he’s still not clicking with the team,” he said.
Boniface, who debuted for Nigeria in September 2023, has made 11 appearances without scoring, drawing comparisons with Victor Osimhen, who has become a fan favorite with his impactful performances.
When asked if Boniface would remain in the squad for future international matches, Eguavoen was resolute.
“He’s still part of the squad.
He will remain part of the squad,” he affirmed.
Boniface, a standout performer at the club level, continues to search for his breakthrough moment with the Super Eagles, while Eguavoen remains determined to help the young striker realize his potential on the international stage.
