Atlanta United’s unexpected 3-2 victory over Inter Miami in the MLS playoffs has sent shockwaves through the soccer world, with fans flooding social media with reactions. Lionel Messi and Inter Miami’s star-studded lineup were knocked out at Chase Stadium after a dramatic performance by the ninth-seeded Five Stripes.

The match saw goals from Matias Rojas for Miami and Messi himself, but these were neutralized by Atlanta’s Jamal Thiare, who scored twice, and Bartosz Slisz, who sealed the win with a goal in the 76th minute. Inter Miami, which set a new MLS record for points during the regular season, lost the final two games in the best-of-three series, leaving fans and analysts questioning how the season favorite fell short.

The loss was particularly notable given Atlanta United’s challenges this season, including a managerial shake-up and the sale of two of their top players. Yet, Atlanta defied expectations, defeating a Miami squad filled with former World Cup and European champions and some of soccer’s most celebrated players.

Fans were quick to react online, with some reigniting the perennial Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo debate. Despite Messi’s earlier success with Inter Miami, including the Supporters’ Shield win, critics were vocal about the star’s surprising playoff exit. One fan commented, “Shame on Messi,” capturing the sentiment of many who anticipated a deeper run for Miami.

After just barely securing a playoff spot on Decision Day, Atlanta United will now face Orlando in the Eastern Conference semifinals in two weeks, riding a wave of momentum with five wins in their last six games.
