The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three suspects involved in the brutal murder of 34-year-old commercial motorcyclist Rafiu Akano, whose decapitated body was found in Asunlere village, Oke-Oyi, Ilorin East Local Government Area, on Sunday, November 4, 2024.
Detectives recovered the severed head of the victim following a search by the police, who discovered his headless body the day after the incident. The suspects—Peter Samuel, Jeremiah Tiozinda, and Sunday Agbenke—were apprehended and confessed to the crime, revealing that they had disposed of the severed head in a nearby river.
Police Public Relations Officer, Ejire-Adeyemi Toun, confirmed the breakthrough, stating, “The Kwara State Police Command wishes to inform the public of an important breakthrough, wherein police investigators at the SCID Ilorin have recovered the dismembered remains of the late Rafiu Akano (M), 34 years old, who was brutally murdered by Peter Samuel (M), Jeremiah Tiozinda (M), and Sunday Agbenke (M) on 4th November 2024.”
The murder was reported after a vigilante patrol team, alerted by the sound of the attack, pursued the suspects who fled into the bush, abandoning the victim’s motorcycle. A mobile phone left behind at the scene led to the suspects’ arrest.
Samuel, who admitted to decapitating the victim with a machete, revealed the motive behind the crime, saying the murder was planned to secure funds for his wife’s burial, as her body lay in a hospital mortuary. He explained, “I’m from Benue State. Sunday Agbenke gave us the
