The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Ogun State Branch, on Tuesday expressed gratitude to Governor Dapo Abiodun for implementing a N20,000 wage increase for pensioners across all categories in the state.

In a letter titled “New Wage Increase to Ogun Pensioners: Expression of Gratitude” and signed by State Chairman Waidi Oloyede, Secretary Bola Lawal, and Treasurer O. Ogabi, the union acknowledged the governor’s consistent support for retirees.

“Your Excellency, we cannot but recognize the many lofty gestures accorded to us by your amazing administration,” the letter read.

“These include prompt and regular payment of monthly pensions, steady release of accrued gratuities, and financial gestures to cushion the effects of the removal of the fuel subsidy, among others,” the letter continued.

The union highlighted that the N20,000 increase, implemented in October 2024, marked the first pension wage raise in 16 years to extend across all payment brackets.

They described the governor’s actions as a demonstration of “sincerity of purpose, love, friendliness, and godliness” toward the elderly.

Despite their gratitude, the union appealed to Governor Abiodun to address the issue of consequential adjustments for long-serving retirees, as recommended by the Federal Government Circular on Consequential Adjustment of Pensions, to ensure fair benefits for those who retired before the 2019 Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act took effect.

The union’s leaders closed their statement by expressing profound appreciation, thanking Governor Abiodun for his “kindness and consideration towards the state retirees at all times.”
