Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has launched an investigation into allegations of mistreatment of minors arrested during the recent #EndBadGovernance protests.

On Friday, 76 suspects, mostly minors, appeared in court with visible signs of malnutrition, according to reports. Six minors collapsed and required medical assistance, sparking public outrage. Responding to the incident, the IG claimed that the fainting episodes in court may have been staged to draw negative attention but assured that medical care was provided.

Amid mounting criticism, President Bola Tinubu directed on Monday that charges against the minors be withdrawn.

In a statement, Force Spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi confirmed that the IG has ordered an investigation into the conditions the minors experienced in custody. Adejobi explained, “The Inspector-General, currently attending the Interpol General Assembly in Glasgow, has vowed to review the findings thoroughly and address any procedural lapses identified.”

In addition, the IG has called for a conference on child-friendly investigative procedures. On November 7, Deputy Commissioners of CID and Heads of Investigation Units will convene at the Police Resource Centre in Jabi for a workshop to reinforce best practices in handling cases involving minors.

The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to fairness, accountability, and the welfare of vulnerable groups in all legal proceedings.
