The newly appointed Acting Chief of Army Staff, Major General Olufemi Oluyede officially took up his duties during a handover ceremony at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja on Friday.
This transition was announced by the Defence Headquarters, which shared photographs from the event on its X handle, captioned: “Formal Taking Over Ceremony of the Acting Chief of Army Staff, Major General OO Oluyede.”
Channels Television reported that President Bola Tinubu appointed Oluyede to the position as an interim measure while Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja is reportedly receiving treatment abroad and is currently unable to fulfill his duties.
Prior to this appointment, Oluyede served as the 56th Commander of the elite Infantry Corps of the Nigerian Army, based in Jaji, Kaduna.
At 56 years old, he shares a close professional relationship with Lagbaja, as both are coursemates from the 39th Regular Course.
Oluyede began his military career as a second lieutenant in 1992, with his commission effective from 1987.
He achieved the rank of Major-General in September 2020.
