The House of Representatives officially renamed its Committee on Niger Delta to the House Committee on Regional Development.
Speaker Abbas Tajuddeen announced the decision on Wednesday, following approval from the House leadership.
Rep. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, daughter of former Delta State Governor James Ibori, currently chairs the committee.
According to Speaker Tajuddeen, the renaming aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent establishment of the Ministry of Regional Development, which will oversee all regional development commissions.
The Ministry will include the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), the North East Development Commission (NEDC), the North West Development Commission (NWDC), and the newly proposed South East and South West Development Commissions, among others.
In a related announcement, the Speaker confirmed that the House would adjourn for a recess from Monday, November 4, to Monday, November 11, 2024, with sessions resuming on Tuesday, November 12.
Tajuddeen explained that the extended recess would enable House members to perform critical oversight duties across various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to enhance accountability on behalf of the Nigerian people.
He called on MDAs to fully cooperate with visiting representatives as mandated by the Nigerian Constitution
