The Federal Government is set to meet with the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) today at 11 a.m. to address the ongoing strike that has disrupted university operations nationwide.
SSANU Vice-President Abdussobur Salaam confirmed to PUNCH Online on Thursday morning that the unions received a formal invitation from the government late Wednesday night.
“We received a formal invitation last night.
The meeting is scheduled for 11 a.m. today.
It will be presided over by the Minister of State for Education and will be held in the Minister’s Conference Room,” Salaam said.
The indefinite strike, which began on Monday, was initiated over four months of unpaid salaries, halting activities across the nation’s universities.
SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim emphasized that the impact is significant, noting that Vice-Chancellors, bursars, and registrars are also affected by the unpaid salaries.
“We have withdrawn our services, and our members are resolute they will not return to work until all salaries are paid,” Ibrahim said.
“This is a long-term battle, with 98% compliance among members.
The strike also involves senior administrators who were not paid, and no one from the government has reached out until now,” he continued.
In addition to the immediate salary payments, the union’s demands include improved remuneration, earned allowances, and the implementation of the 2009 agreements with the government.
