The Jigawa State Government announced that it has prosecuted 403 individuals arrested during the August 1 #EndBadGovernance protests. The demonstrations, part of a nationwide movement that lasted 10 days, called for reduced governance costs, the reinstatement of petrol subsidies, food security, and improved fiscal discipline.
While peaceful in some regions, the protests escalated into violence in others, leading to incidents of looting and vandalism across several states.
Speaking to reporters in Dutse on Monday, Jigawa’s Attorney-General, Bello Abdulkadir-Fanini, confirmed that all those arrested had been brought to court. He stated that some were sentenced to community service, while others facing criminal charges were released on bail, with investigations ongoing in their respective cases.
“From September 1, 2024, to date, the ministry has made significant progress in fulfilling its mandate,” Abdulkadir-Fanini noted. “The public prosecution department has successfully prosecuted 403 individuals linked to the August 1, 2024, riot in Jigawa state.”
He further confirmed that by mid-September, there was no one in detention related to the protests.
