Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman, currently playing for Atalanta, stands as Africa’s sole nominee at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris on Monday, a recognition that underscores his remarkable rise and performances over the past year.

The 27-year-old heads into the event with momentum after a stellar performance on Saturday, where he scored twice and provided two assists in Atalanta’s 6-1 victory, exiting to applause in the 56th minute.

His Ballon d’Or nomination marks a significant career milestone, making him the only African shortlisted for the award this year.

“It’s special being on the list and even more special being the only African,” Lookman told BBC Sport Africa. “We have achieved great things this year, with club and country. To be recognised as one of the contenders is a great achievement.”

Lookman’s journey to this nomination has been notable, highlighted by his historic hat-trick in a European final that secured Atalanta’s first-ever Europa League title against Bayer Leverkusen.

“That night was special,” Lookman recalled. “The way we did it was incredible because Leverkusen were on fire that season. Those are the moments you wish and dream for.”

Since joining Atalanta in August 2022, Lookman has flourished under coach Gian Piero Gasperini’s guidance, adapting to a new culture and excelling in a demanding system.

“Coming out of my comfort zone is never easy, but I’m open to that idea of learning and wanting to be better—not just as a player, but as a person also,” he shared.

With his performances garnering widespread acclaim, Lookman is also the frontrunner for the 2024 CAF Player of the Year award, where he contends with compatriot William Troost-Ekong and eight other nominees.

Yet, his focus remains on collective success, especially with Nigeria’s national team. Lookman played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s journey to the 2023 AFCON final, where they finished runners-up to Ivory Coast.

“I’m anticipating the future because I’m looking forward to achieving great things,” he said. “I’m never really satisfied. That’s always my mindset—let’s go for more.”
