The UK Government donated advanced counter-Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) equipment to the Operation Hadin Kai Theatre Command Joint Task Force in Maiduguri On Friday.
This donation represents a significant step forward in the strategic partnership between the UK and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The counter-IED equipment, primarily designed for military and law enforcement use, facilitates the standoff detection of explosives and their precursors, helping to neutralize threats from improvised explosive devices.
The equipment was officially handed over to Theatre Commander Maj.-Gen. Waidi Shuaibu by representatives from the British Defence Staff West Africa, in the presence of senior officers from the Nigerian Army.
UK Defence Attaché to Nigeria, Col. Matt Lynch, emphasized the UK government’s commitment to aiding Nigeria’s military in combating terrorism, particularly in the Northeast.
“The devices being donated are highly technical, non-lethal military equipment meant to complement the efforts of the Nigerian military in countering all forms of IED ambushes during operations,” Lynch stated.
He added that the new equipment includes specialized IED detectors and tools designed to identify and safely neutralize explosive threats.
Brig.-Gen. Abdulrazak Kazeem, Commander of the 47 Engineer Brigade, highlighted the importance of the donation, calling it timely in light of recent developments in counter-IED operations in the region.
He noted, “This equipment covers the full spectrum of IED countermeasures and will support both operational and training efforts.”
Kazeem elaborated on the significance of the new capabilities stating that “With this new capability, we can analyze and identify areas where IEDs are being manufactured, allowing us to attack these staging areas directly by intercepting the bomb makers at the source.
Our aim is to reduce casualties and prevent IEDs from being deployed against our forces and communities.”
He further explained that some of the tools are earmarked for the training school, ensuring personnel are well-prepared and strategies remain effective throughout all phases of counter-IED operations.
In his remarks, Maj.-Gen. Waidi expressed gratitude for the ongoing UK support, which includes training for Nigerian Explosive Ordnance Disposal operators and the establishment of a Counter-IED Coordination Cell at the 47 Engineer Brigade.
Waidi said, “These initiatives, along with previous assistance, clearly demonstrate the British government’s commitment to fully neutralizing IED threats in the theatre.
This support significantly contributes to our mandate in Operation Hadin Kai, as we work toward restoring normalcy in the Northeast and creating an environment where socio-economic activities can thrive.”
He assured that the donated equipment would enhance the troop’s capacity to mitigate IED threats effectively.
“I extend my sincere appreciation to the British Defence Section for their continued support in building the capacity of our Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) operators, as well as their role in establishing the CIED Coordination Cell at the 47 Engineer Brigade through an ongoing mentorship course,” Waidi concluded, also thanking Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Christopher Musa and other Service Chiefs for their unwavering support.
