Northern Democrats Urge Tinubu To Set Stronger Example In Cost-Cutting Measures

The League of Northern Democrats called on President Bola Tinubu to demonstrate a stronger commitment to reducing government expenses amid ongoing economic hardship intensified by recent fuel subsidy removal and naira devaluation policies.

The president recently directed ministers to limit their convoys to three vehicles as part of a cost-saving initiative.

While this measure has sparked mixed reactions, the League of Northern Democrats, a prominent political movement, argues that further action is needed.

“Leadership is about inspiration,” said the group’s spokesperson, Ladan Salihu, on Friday’s Sunrise Daily program on Channels Television.

“You cannot buy a presidential jet for 170 billion and a yacht for five billion and then talk about cost-saving measures.

This is only symbolic,” Salihu said.

The League also raised concerns about the directive’s impact and sustainability, suggesting it might be insufficient to achieve real change.

“When you say ministerial vehicles are reduced to three, I have to ask: what happens to the rest? Will they be stored somewhere? The vehicles are already purchased, meaning ministers with 10 vehicles will simply set aside seven,” Salihu explained.

Skeptical about the directive’s implementation, Salihu urged Nigerians to manage expectations.

“Don’t expect to see a drastic reduction in ministerial convoys.

If someone says it’s going to happen, we’re only deceiving ourselves,” he stated.

The League’s appeal adds to the ongoing debate over Tinubu’s recent cost-cutting measures and their impact on governance.
