The Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development granted approval for Kogi State’s proposal to build an international airport in Zariagi, marking a significant milestone in the state’s infrastructural development.
According to Kogi State’s Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, the approval was communicated in a letter dated October 9, 2024.
Fanwo emphasized the commitment of Governor Usman Ododo’s administration to the project’s timely completion, adhering to all regulatory standards.
He noted that the airport would serve Kogi and 10 surrounding states, easing congestion at Abuja’s International Airport and reducing traffic along the busy Lokoja-Abuja route.
“The Ododo Administration has prioritized establishing an international airport for Kogi State, positioning it as a strategic aviation hub,” Fanwo said.
“The state’s central location is an invaluable asset, offering unique potential to harness the aviation service market in the heart of Nigeria,” he continued.
Fanwo highlighted the project’s expected economic impact, underscoring that the airport would generate jobs and elevate Kogi’s standing on a global scale.
“The Governor is dedicated to hiring top professionals in the industry to ensure the project’s success.
Aviation is a field where trust and standards are paramount,” he said.
Fanwo expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Aviation Minister for supporting the initiative, noting that cargo capacity is a key focus for the airport’s design.
Reassuring the people of Kogi, Fanwo said Governor Ododo’s administration remains focused on implementing transformative projects to build on Kogi’s achievements of the past eight years.
He added that Zariagi, already home to an airstrip, had met the criteria outlined by the Federal Ministry of Aviation, with officials expressing satisfaction with the proposed site and development plans.
