The Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has expressed deep condolences to the families and community members affected by the recent cult-related killings in Nibo, Awka South Local Government Area.
Thirteen people were reportedly killed during the clash, which occurred on Sunday as the community celebrated its New Yam festival.
Speaking at Eke Market in Awka on Monday, during his routine inspection across the state, Governor Soludo vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice and intensify efforts to eradicate cultism in Anambra.
“No matter where the perpetrators hide, they will be brought to justice,” Soludo assured, urging the public to continue with their lawful activities without fear.
Reflecting on the tragic incident, he said, “Every avoidable loss of life in Anambra shatters my heart, especially when young lives are cut short.
The mindless violence between rival cults in our communities is heartbreaking.
Yesterday’s tragic incident in Nibo, where young lives were lost, is unacceptable.”
Soludo highlighted the state’s anti-cultism law and ordered immediate action against those responsible for the violence.
However, he stressed that laws alone are insufficient, calling on parents and community leaders to collaborate in protecting the youth.
“But laws alone aren’t enough.
Parents and community leaders, let’s join forces to protect our youth.
We can’t sit back while our children destroy themselves,” the governor urged.
He further emphasized the need for collective action within homes and communities to combat the scourge of cultism, promising that the state would continue to pray for the souls of the victims and work towards creating a safer Anambra where the law prevails.
“We must learn from this avoidable tragedy and strive for a better future,” Soludo concluded.
