Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has inaugurated four fully equipped, solar-powered science laboratories at Union Boys Secondary School, Awkunanaw, Enugu. The laboratories, donated by the MTN Foundation under its Science & Technology Laboratory project, include facilities for Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Agricultural Science.

Representing the governor at the event, Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Lawrence Ezeh, praised MTN Foundation for its contribution to the development of the state, particularly in education, healthcare, water provision, and road infrastructure. He highlighted MTN’s extensive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts, stating, “MTN has demonstrated that it is the leading network provider in terms of CSR impact across the country.”

Dr. Ezeh further acknowledged MTN’s ongoing interventions in various sectors within the state, including healthcare and clean water initiatives in rural areas. He also noted the state’s current efforts in building 260 digital smart schools to support education from early childhood to JSS-3.

“MTN is also involved in the construction of the Enugu-Awka-Onitsha Dual Carriageway and other projects that directly benefit our people. As a state, we express our gratitude,” he added.

The governor called on the school’s old boys association to ensure the proper use and maintenance of the newly commissioned facilities.

Mrs. Odunayo Sanya, Executive Director of MTN Foundation, announced plans to build a solar-powered water borehole to provide continuous water supply to the laboratories, ensuring their optimal operation.

Rev. Prof. Sam Ike, the Anglican Bishop of Enugu and proprietor of the school, commended the initiative, stating that the new laboratories would revitalize the teaching and learning of science subjects, making them more practical and engaging for students and teachers.
