The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), through its Public Health Department (PHD), activated a Cholera Emergency Operations Centre as part of its preparedness measures to manage any potential cholera outbreak.
Speaking at the activation over the weekend, Gana Adam, Permanent Secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, emphasized the need for swift action in response to the growing number of cholera cases reported across Nigeria’s 36 states.
He highlighted the vulnerability of the FCT as an emerging urban center, stating, “As an emerging city, the FCT is at risk of cholera, and is taking proactive steps to prevent and contain the spread of the disease.”
Adam assured that the Secretariat will allocate all necessary resources to prevent a cholera outbreak within the FCT.
He also called on relevant stakeholders to collaborate in developing effective strategies to combat the disease.
As of October 13, 2024, a total of 14,237 cholera cases have been recorded nationwide, affecting 339 local government areas.
Tragically, 378 lives have been lost, resulting in a case fatality rate of approximately 2.7%.
