Senate President Godswill Akpabio has categorically dismissed reports alleging that senators are conspiring to impeach him.
The speculation was fueled by a dubious online platform claiming that the Department of State Services (DSS) had taken control of the National Assembly to prevent Akpabio’s impeachment.
Addressing the matter during Wednesday’s plenary session, Akpabio, who presided over the meeting, suggested that the individuals behind the report might be motivated by the desire to increase traffic to their websites.
“They said DSS has surrounded the National Assembly to possibly stop the impeachment of principal officers,” Akpabio stated.
“There is no limit to what social media can do.
We are sitting down here doing our work peacefully, oblivious of the mischief,” he continued.
He further questioned the credibility of the claims, asking, “Which committee do we refer this to? I understand that they are being paid if they have a lot of traffic, but I hope the public is aware that this is total fake news.”
In response to the allegations, Akpabio referred the issue to the special duties committee for investigation, urging a report back as soon as possible.
