Gunmen have killed six individuals, including a commercial vehicle driver, in an attack on a road traveling from Takum Local Government Area to Wukari Local Government Area in Taraba State. The incident took place at Sai community, a border area stretching into Benue State, as confirmed by Takum Council Chairman John Ali on Monday.
The attack occurred on the Takum-Wukari Express Road, the same area where gunmen recently ambushed and killed the traditional ruler of Chanchanji and his son. The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) had previously been cautioned against using the route early in the morning due to its volatility.
According to Chairman Ali, the vehicle, which departed Takum at around 6:00 am, was targeted by the attackers as it approached Sai. The gunmen emerged from the bush and opened fire, killing all six occupants, including the driver.
Ali indicated that security agencies have been instructed to retrieve the bodies and pursue the assailants. A security team had been established by the governor following the earlier attack on the Chanchanji chief and his son, but the patrol was not yet operational when this incident occurred.
“We had previously warned the NURTW and other unions against traveling early due to the lack of active security patrols,” Ali said. “It is unclear why this driver ignored the warning and became a victim. The government is committed to ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice.”
