A murder investigation has been launched against former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in connection with the police killing of a man during last month’s civil unrest.
Alongside Hasina, six other senior officials from the previous government are also under investigation following weeks of violent protests in Dhaka.
Mamun Mia, a lawyer representing a private citizen, stated that a Dhaka court has ordered police to formally accept the murder case against the accused.
This marks the initial phase of a criminal investigation under Bangladeshi law.
Sheikh Hasina recently resigned and fled to India earlier this month amid escalating political unrest that destabilized her government.
The unrest, driven by student protests, led to over 400 deaths, with many reportedly shot by police under Hasina’s orders.
The murder case was initiated by businessman Amir Hamza after local grocer Abu Saeed was shot in the head on July 19 while crossing the road during a student-led demonstration.
According to testimony provided to a magistrate’s court, the police fired indiscriminately into the crowd. Among those being investigated is former Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader.
