President Bola Tinubu has approved the National Policy on Health Workforce Migration, a strategic move aimed at addressing the pressing challenges within Nigeria’s healthcare sector. Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, announced the development on his X handle on Monday.

The newly approved policy is designed not only to respond to the ongoing exodus of healthcare professionals but to offer a comprehensive strategy for managing, harnessing, and reversing health worker migration. Prof. Pate emphasized that the policy reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s healthcare system by creating a supportive and effective environment for health workers.

“This landmark policy will transform the management of healthcare human resources in Nigeria,” said Pate. “It addresses critical challenges, aiming to retain and optimally utilize our workforce to meet the nation’s healthcare needs.”

Key elements of the policy include the Nigeria Human Health Resource Programme, which focuses on regular reviews of working conditions, particularly in rural and underserved areas. This framework is intended to ensure that health workers are adequately recognized and rewarded, promoting professional growth and stability within the country.

The policy also highlights the integration of advanced health technologies, such as Electronic Medical Records and telehealth, to enhance healthcare delivery and ensure equitable distribution of health workers. It includes provisions for continuous professional development and international training opportunities to equip healthcare professionals with cutting-edge skills.

Additionally, the policy addresses the return and reintegration of Nigerian health professionals from the Diaspora by streamlining registration processes and offering attractive incentives. It aims to leverage the expertise of the Diaspora to bridge gaps in the local health sector while advocating for reciprocal agreements with other nations to protect Nigeria’s interests.

The policy also emphasizes work-life balance, with measures including routine health checks, mental well-being support, and reasonable working hours to reduce burnout and improve job satisfaction.

Oversight of the policy will be managed by the National Human Resources for Health Programme in collaboration with state governments, ensuring effective implementation and alignment with broader health sector goals.

With this initiative, the National Policy on Health Workforce Migration is set to secure the future of Nigeria’s healthcare system, aiming to provide quality care for all Nigerians and transform the sector under President Tinubu’s leadership.
